In 1997, the Student Advisory Board began to recognize the need to salute the wonderful teachers who not only motivate, support, help and encourage their students with science fairs, but who also have shown excellence in teaching and contributed to improving the quality of science education. The Teacher of the Year honor is bestowed upon two teachers each year, a junior and senior division advisor. What is truly special about this award is that it is students who nominate them and students who review all the nominations to determine the Teacher of the Year. After all, the students who make up the Student Advisory Board get there because of their experience with dedicated and inspiring teachers. Past Teacher of the Year recipients:1997 Larry Nordell, Mt. Miguel High 1998 Kellie Marcarelli, Sacred Heart Academy Dr. Neal Biggart, Bonita Vista High 1999 Karen Ellsworth, Our Lady of Grace Cherice Kelso, Soille San Diego Hebrew Day 2000 Elaine Gillum, Marshall Middle School Rick Kane, Southwest Junior High 2001 Dr. Sara Watts, Memorial Junior High School Bill Miller, Lewis (Harvey L.) Middle School 2002 Martin Teachworth, La Jolla High School Roxanne Hunker, Rhodes School 2003 Olga Carreno, Vincent Memorial High School Jonathan McLeod, St. Francis of Assisi School 2004 Nominate your teacher!!! Nominations are accepted throughout March and until Registration Day. Winners are announced at the Awards Ceremony.
